DR EDWARD DE BONO shares his thinking with delegates at the BlueSkySkills conference held at Whitgift School, Croydon.
Dr Edward de Bono, the world authority on teaching thinking, was the special guest speaker at our recent conference held at Whitgift School in Croydon.
Dr de Bono addressed delegates about how they can apply his Thinking Tools to develop independent thinking in education.
The one day conference explored how schools are using the Edward de Bono Thinking Tools to personalise learning and thereby promote independent thinking. Workshops giving practical examples of the uses of Six Thinking Hats, CoRT1 and CoRT4 Thinking tools across the curriculum were offered in the morning and afternoon.
The workshops ranged from Taster sessions in the Six Thinking Hats, CoRT1 and CoRT4 Thinking tools to ‘Extending the Gifted & Talented’ and ‘Supporting Independent Learning’
Workshops were led by teachers and trainers accredited in the Edward de Bono thinking skills, and covered all education phases, from reception to Year 13. Mrs Helen Hyde, headteacher at Watford Grammar School for Girls and de Bono accredited trainer, spoke of the whole school approach that she and her senior management team have adopted. Speaking about the impact de Bono’s Thinking Tools can have on younger children, Mrs Di Trainor, headteacher of Salfords Primary School in Surrey, discussed how using the Six Thinking Hats has improved SATs results and in house test results, as well as reducing problems with behaviour in the playground.
After lunch three schools presented their use of the de Bono Thinking Skills across the whole school and illustrated how the de Bono Thinking Tools can be a valuable asset to students and teachers alike. The three schools featured were Salfords Primary School in Surrey, Malmsbury School, a comprehensive in Wiltshire and the hosts of the day, Whitgift School. Our thanks go to Di Trainor, Headteacher of Salfords Primary, John Barrett, Assistant Head of Malmsbury School and Craig Carolan, Head of Learning Development at Whitgift School for their inspiring presentations.
Delegates to the conference included UK head and deputy head teachers across all phases of education and from the state and independent sectors.
Speaking of the conference, Denise Inwood, Managing Director of Atkey Solutions said; “For our young people to have the opportunity to achieve their full potential, we owe them the right to experience tools and techniques that will help them to build self esteem and confidence to make effective decisions and choices. Not just to enable them to operate in a commercial environment, but also to operate effectively in their lives.”
The whole day was a huge success and we would like to thank all those who attended the day and helped it to be such a terrific event.
