Expertise

I have taught science for a number of years, but I still have ideas and energy to give to other aspects of teaching. I enjoy my current role as Strategy Manager; my chief responsibility is based around my interest in how we support students to become better thinkers. Whilst recognising the value of a National Curriculum and validated qualifications, these have not resulted in an education system that is focussed on developing creativity and independence of thought..

My aim is to support the development of a philosophy and framework to which staff and students can relate. I believe that the notion of seeing acts of thinking as behavioural dispositions rather than of solely intellectual capacity is crucial. In this respect, my energies are directed towards staff and student training; supporting the core philosophy, sharing teaching tools and focussing on developing metacognition.

The Six Hat Thinking tool is a technique that fits well with this philosophy. [ I also endorse the CoRT system – but one thing at a time!] The response from staff has been enthusiastic and they recognise the power and simplicity of the technique. My experience, when using it in teaching and managing meetings, is that it is very worthwhile.
